Shelburne, with all its history and charm, is now welcoming a new option in luxury housing. Shelburne Cliffs, at 333 Morgan Drive, will occupy the former Pillars Mansion situated off Harbor Road.

The large, gracious Colonial Revival home was built by the prosperous Morgan family in 1910. Mr. Morgan purchased the land for the estate from Dr. W. Seward Webb and his wife, Eliza Vanderbilt Webb. The house was built in the fashionable Colonial Revival style, a style well suited to the large commanding homes built by many wealthy New Englanders at the turn of the century. It included 28 rooms and 10 fireplaces, as well as an elegant porte cochere. The building has been through a number of transformations in its near 100-year history.

Morgan commissioned the mansion to be built as his year-round residence, and later he used it as a summer home. In 1939, Howard Spaulding of Greenwich, Connecticut bought the property and occupied it until 1946 when he sold it to Socrates Zolotas. Zolotas and his family lived there until 1953, when the estate was converted into a restaurant and inn known as The Harbor Inn. Harry Webb, grandson of the original landowner purchased the property in 1959. He renovated the mansion and continued to operate it as a fashionable inn until its sale in 1965. The estate was then sold to Dr. Richard Goldsborough, who used it as his personal residence.

The 10,000 square foot mansion and adjoining property was then sold to Leonora Peverly and Wilda Routhier who transformed it into an elegant retirement home which operated until 2002.

It is rare to find a property in Chittenden County which offers such commanding views to both the east and the west. The 6.6 manicured acres of lakefront property overlook Lake Champlain and the dramatic multi-tiered Adirondack Mountains to the west. The vista to the east is equally breathtaking with views of Shelburne Bay and the Green Mountains in the distance.
